Do you remember when you first started to pursue your goals? That burning passion and drive that just wouldnât stop. You were absolutely OBSESSED⊠nothing could get in your way. Well⊠a few months later, maybe your goals are taking longer than you expected.
Maybe your heart isnât in it anymore. Maybe youâre exhausted from aiming towards a singular objective day in and day out. Or itâs none of those â maybe itâs the curse of mediocrity thatâs diagnosed from the trap of success.
After being consistent, intentional, and driven, you finally reached some of your goals. This is where most people let off the gas⊠they become complacent. A bit lazier, more relaxed, and lacking the same discipline they once had.
Thereâs a time and a place to enjoy what youâve achieved but a life lived without goals ( no matter how big or small ) is a dull life. Thereâs a reason why the most successful athletes, business-people and artists have achieved what most people havenât. yes itâs drive, yes itâs discipline, yes itâs consistency. But past that, it's the ability to avoid complacency even after reaching their dream goals.
Someone might ask, tell me Sakhile, what is this complacency thing you keep talking about? Iâve never even heard of this word, or I have I just donât know what it means. Ok! let me take a minute and explain it nicely for you đ.
Complacency is a state of satisfaction or contentment with one's current situation, often accompanied by a lack of motivation or a reluctance to pursue further growth or improvement. It is a mindset that can hinder progress and prevent individuals from reaching their full potential.
When someone becomes complacent, they may become too comfortable with their current circumstances and settle for mediocrity. They may lose their drive to learn, grow, and challenge themselves. Complacency can manifest in various aspects of life, including personal relationships, professional endeavors, and even in matters of health and wellness. It can have detrimental effects on personal and professional growth. It can lead to missed opportunities, a lack of innovation, and a decline in performance. When individuals become complacent, they may resist change, become resistant to feedback, and fail to adapt to new challenges.
It is important to note that complacency is not the same as contentment. Contentment is a healthy state of satisfaction and gratitude for what one has achieved, while complacency is a stagnant state that inhibits progress and personal development.
Overcoming complacency requires self-awareness and a willingness to push beyond comfort zones. It involves embracing a growth mindset, setting challenging goals, and continually seeking opportunities for learning and improvement. By recognizing and addressing complacency, individuals can break free from its limitations and pursue a path of continuous growth and success.
How do we get ourselves out of the trouble we find ourselves in? I have a few solutions but remember, life is not a one size fit all. I am hopeful that, you will be triggered to think outside of your comfort zone and make a lasting solution for yourself in 2024
The Solution
1) Yesterday is done, today is a new day.
Creating a culture of excellence is about starting each day from scratch and avoid holding yesterdayâs achievements as an excuse for todayâs shortcomings.
Get 1% better everyday. Getting 1% better means putting a purpose to each day. Have daily goals that will push you towards your larger, long term goals.
2) Keep working hard
In sports they say, âTrain hard, recover harderâ Even on our days off, our mind is still aiming towards our goals. Our actions align with our words.
Whether itâs sleeping right, making sure you eat right, or even taking that extra 20 minutes to stretch each night, every action is towards a certain goal.
This is the price of winning.
3) Process mindset
Focus on the process, not the outcome. If you arenât reaching your goals, adjust the process. You can always adjust actions to get to your goals. Figuring out a way to make progress. But if you try to adjust your major goal all the time, you will not go anywhere. The process is the formula that you compute over time to reach your goals. Figure out how to be efficient, better, and smarter.
That is how success is made.
4) Your failures are lessons
Things donât always go the way we expect or want. But itâs not about how many times you get hit, itâs about how many times you get up.
Every âfailureâ is a way to learn and grow. So many people fail over and over and donât adjust.
Learn, become a student of yourself. You have to be obsessed with fixing your mistakes, learning how to be better.
5) Reset and recharge
Reaching your goals and avoiding complacency takes a different kind of work ethic. Sometimes a work-life balance isnât realistic when chasing your dreams. But in order to avoid complacency you have to fit in time for hobbies, relaxation, and quality time with family and friends. This helps you recharge and not become a person working on autopilot, lacking intention.
I have spoken too much, I feel like I am in a lecture theatre teaching đ. In summary. We always have summaries, itâs like a thing for us. Remember if tot want to join the writing team, please feel free to contact us on [email protected]. We really want to learn from you too.
Ok here is the conclusion. You donât just want to show and and go through the motions all the time, year in year out, remember you need to create goals for each day and once you attain your goal, thatâs when you sustain the discipline. Imagine if you never tapered off, and if you worked as hard as you did on day 1⊠but every single day. How far would you be in your journey if you pushed 110% each day?
Maybe a lot farther than you are now.
I know when I started working each day like it was do or die, I saw significant strides in my goals. A LOT faster than most people. Just through intention and discipline.
THAT is where growth occurs.
THAT is how you succeed.
I understand that feeling of pure exhaustion and burnout, disappointments and failures more than I let out. Itâs at this point that most of us throw in the towel and give up.
If you can push through those feelings that fuel complacency, youâre already ahead of 99% of your competition.
